A yellow warning warning is in place as heavy rain showers and thunderstorms have been forecast for this weekend
Today is expected to be very unsettled with scattered showers affecting most areas across the country, turning heavy and persistent at times.
Across the southwest heavy rain is set to move in from the Atlantic during the afternoon.
A status yellow weather warning has been issued for south Munster.
Between 25 and 44mm of rain is expected, with Kerry and Cork set to be the worst affected, according to Met Éireann.
The weather warning is in place from 9am this morning until 9am Saturday morning.

On a brighter note, the cold snap which we have been experiencing isn’t expected to get any worse, with highs of 14 degrees forecast.
Saturday, a band of heavy rain is set to move northwards over the country during the morning and afternoon.

Some brighter and drier conditions are forecast in southern areas, before further outbreaks of rain continue for the late afternoon and evening.
Sunday morning will get our hopes up with some bright spells, but they will soon be dashed as more heavy and persistent rain follows.
Meanwhile, motorists are being advised by AA Roadwatch to take care on the roads due to surface water on the M50 and N11.
The accident on the N11 has now been cleared but heavy delays remain on the N11 from the Greystones exit onwards.
A crash has been reported on the M50 Southbound just off the ramp at the Leopardstown exit.
“What’s happening is we had been dominated by a Scandinavian high for the last while, but that is going to be replaced by a more typical Atlantic flow, which brings with it more wind and rain," Met Éireann's Siobhan Ryan told independent.ie.
“Sunday isn’t looking like a great day for a lot of the country, it will be very up and down, and in general it will be wet for most of the country, except for the midland counties.
“However, there is some good news, as next week looks to be a big improvement with dry weather returning.”
