Secondary schools will be thrown into chaos in the run up to Christmas with seven days of closures due to teacher strikes.
The wave of work stoppages by the Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland (ASTI) will affect up to 250,000 students.
The teacher stoppage follows strikes by public transport workers and will cross over with the Garda strike. Nurses are also considering industrial action.
In November alone, there are four days where there are either teacher or Garda strikes.
More than half the country's second-level schools are now facing effective closure from Thursday, October 27.
The teachers are demanding full restoration of pay equality for newly-qualified teachers.
The union has also announced withdrawal from supervision and substitution duties from Monday, November 7, which is likely to close about 450 schools indefinitely.
The 18,000 ASTI teachers could be facing heavy financial losses as they go ahead with strike plans starting within weeks.
The Department of Education could not confirm last night if teachers would continue to be paid if they withdraw from supervision and substitution work.
