A new €50 bank note will go into circulation across Europe from today.
The new €50 note is similar in design to the existing note, and is still the familiar orange shade currently.
However, the texture of the new note is more firm and less inclined to tear than the notes in circulation at present.
Alongside the cosmetic changes, enhanced security features have been added to combat counterfeiting.
The new note is being introduced as part of the European Central Bank’s mission to avoid counterfeiting by organised criminals across the continent.
The ECB has rolled out changes to the €5, €10 and €20 notes in the past.
The design of the new note encourages consumers to “feel, look at and tilt” the note, which the ECB says will allow people to identify whether or not it is authentic.
At a briefing of journalists, the Central Bank of Ireland said it has actively engaged with stakeholders to offer the necessary support and guidance before the note was distributed.
The Central Bank said that €75m worth of notes will go into circulation from today onwards.
The existing €50 note will remain legal tender, with the new €50 circulating alongside it.
