Hour long waits have faced voters in parts of the United States as Hispanics and women turned out in huge numbers.
The early voting signs are good for Hillary Clinton as the demographics most likely to back her are turning out in big numbers.
But there have been fears of intimidation with Democrats filing a flurry of last minute lawsuits alleging voter intimidation by Donald Trump supporters.
There have been heated rows at some polling stations with monitors on high alert.
No such problems at the Jacqueline Kennedy Oanansis High School close to Times Square in New York where Democrat and Republican observers are working together.
But they did run into trouble when one of the voting machines stalled during the early morning rush.
A board of election official who arrived to resolve the issue described the situation across the city as “crazy”.
“I’ve never seen queues like it,” she said.
After the most divisive campaign history there are no timid views at the polling station.
Israeli native Rose Shapiro told Independent.ie she went for Trump because she doesn’t want eight more years of Obama policies.
“I’m an immigrant and I know everything about that. We do construction and we take people from Mexico. I treat them well, I give them breakfast, lunch, clothing and everything. And they cheat us from here to there,” she said.
The attorney argues that in 20 years “this country is going to be Latino”.
“You’re going to have to speak Spanish. I want to take my money and get out of here. I tell that to my kids that studied at Yale and Harvard.In 20 years time this will be a third world country.”
The 73-year-old adds that Clinton’s health is an issue. “She’s also sick I think. She doesn’t look to be a healthy person.”
However, another voter Jennifer (who didn’t want to give her surname) said Clinton is the “only one with the experience for the job”.
“I mean Donald Trump is not even a consideration for people who have moral values.
I think he’s very charismatic. He’s a good presenter. He can get people very worked up which I also think is dangerous.
“He doesn’t have experience. He’s a business guy. And in terms of moral fibre clearly he lacks it.”
Stewart Fisher, a lifelong Democrat, described the election as “disgusting” and “not worth of the issues we have to deal with”.
“He could handle the responsibilities of the office. I consider him a dangerous man. I wouldn’t feel comfortable with him running the country and controlling the military,” Fisher said.
